Oakland Nature

Oakland is the heart of the East Bay Regional Park District, encompassing about 75,000 acres including over 50 parks and 20 regional hiking trails.  Oakland's west border consists of 19 miles of coastline along the beautiful San Francisco Bay. To the east, are the majestic Oakland Hills, from which one can see the beautiful skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

Lake Merritt, the largest urban saltwater lake in the United States of America, is located in middle of the beautiful Lakeside Park which offers public show gardens,  boat rentals, and city related events. The locally famous "Necklace of Lights" shines around the 3.5-mile perimeter of the lake.

 

Oakland History

Oakland was originally part of the 48,000 acre Rancho San Antonio which was owned by Luis Maria Peralta, a Spanish cavalry sergeant. Horace W. Carpentier purchased a large parcel of the land in the rancho for a townsite. Oakland was named for the evergreen oak trees abundant in the surrounding landscape. The city of Oakland was found in 1850.
