Oakland is the heart of the East Bay Regional Park District, encompassing about 75,000 acres including over 50 parks and 20 regional hiking trails.  Oakland's west border consists of 19 miles of coastline along the beautiful San Francisco Bay. Oakland was originally part of the 48,000 acre Rancho San Antonio which was owned by Luis Maria Peralta, a Spanish cavalry sergeant. Horace W. Carpentier purchased a large parcel of the land in the rancho for a townsite. Oakland was named for the evergreen oak trees abundant in the surrounding landscape. The city of Oakland was found in 1850.
