Oakland was originally part of the 48,000 acre Rancho San Antonio which was owned by Luis Maria Peralta, a Spanish cavalry sergeant. Horace W. Carpentier purchased a large parcel of the land in the rancho for a townsite. Oakland was named for the evergreen oak trees abundant in the surrounding landscape. The city of Oakland was found in 1850.
